As the Greed Island Dodgeball Finals continue, with the prize being the super-rare Path of Shore card, Razor continues to show off his ball throwing skills. After his ball knocks Gon out of the game, he throws a ball with enough power and spin that it takes out Bisky and breaks Hisoka’s hand when he catches it. Gon uses his team’s “Back”, a rule that allows one player to get back in the game (they are clearly not playing under the American Dodgeball Association of America rulebook), to reenter the game at this point. He then uses his powerful Rock, Paper, Scissors punch to take out one of Razor’s clones. Seeing this isn’t enough power, he uses a charged up version to take out Razor, only to have Razor use his team’s “Back”. This leaves Gon’s team with a several problems. One, Gon is exhausted from his two huge hits of the ball. Two, Hisoka can’t throw with his broken hand. Three, Killua’s hands are royally fucked after holding the ball for Gon on both of the punches. And four, after taking out the last clone, Razor has been able to regain possession of the ball.
I really didn’t expect a major battle in this arc to be a game of dodgeball. I also didn’t really expect Gon and Killua to be this willing to team up with their old nemesis, Hisoka, to win. They have other, less sportsmanlike, options to win, but instead they are playing to get a win they can feel good about. And at the same time, it feels like they are inspiring the adults in the room with both their immense power, and their belief that they can win this match without resorting to any loopholes to give them an unfair advantage. Not that I would begrudge them if they did find some unfair advantage, there is a ball travelling at deadly speed flying about. The lesson, as always, Gon is a stubborn little brat.
