It occurs to me now that I may be the most incapable human being when it comes to sticking to my promises and such.
It grieves me to start off this post on such a downbeat note but when I’ve missed posts and lessons, I really have no other alternative.
So what else is new?
The deadline for college applications is fast approaching and I’m happy to say that I’ve completed everything I have to do. I’m just waiting for some recommendation letters and school transcripts, although how they are going to be done before christmas beats me.
The pile of books on my desk is as high as ever but I haven’t touched any of them. I’ve even forgotten how some of my old books feel and read. I’ve been absent from reading for THAT long,
I have been on a Naruto Spree these past few days if you must know and yes, I did kind of hate on it previously and all I said then still holds true. I’m simply watching it because I need closure. And the story sucks. Like literally sucks. I appreciate how deep and philosophical it is aspiring to be but when the story is so deep and philosophical that you have stories of Trees literally wanting revenge on humans over centuries old chakra stealing and SEALING AWAY A DEMON inside the moon and then sending it up to sky, then it’s a bit of a stretch.
Perhaps the best instance of spiritual backstory occurred in Legend of Korra Season two. That back story was so simple yet amazingly resonant that it was instantly believable. Rather than constantly invent new more powerful deities in each episode to convince watchers of how awesome the stuff that happens it, Legend of Korra actually stuck to two simpler ones. Also, rather than grant the main characters powers that literally shake the universe, it has the main character win the ultimate battle with powers we already know and understand and have no trouble believing are part and parcel of her.
Seriously, Naruto the anime can give lessons to every other anime on how to alienate characters from the fans. Naruto, who I liked those days, is now an annoying brat who just can’t shut up about how miserable his past was and how awesome it is that he has friends in his fricking heart and how he will always become hokage and and blah blah blah. I also kind of hate how everyone just worships him and all his powers now come without him actually having to work for it at all.
Remember how he trained really hard and mastered the Rasenshuriken? Well maybe some of you don’t even know what I’m talking about.
But I’ll say it anyway. Him getting world-saving powers after only shouting out some seriously idealistic bullshit is nerve-grating and irksome. Work for your mind-boggling powers and then we’ll talk.
Seriously.
Lessons:
1. Promises are troublesome. So are daily self-challenges and without working hard, you can’t fulfill either.
2. Time moves fast. Like really fast. One moment you’re watching a blond, naive blue-eyed shinobi win a battle with his loud mouth, and the next, you’re having dinner to close up another wasted day.
3. I probably care too much about Naruto Shippuden. Like seriously. When the main character ends up on my blacklist amidst some very real people, it’s time to dial down and get a reality check.
No you cannot kill that roach with shuriken. Get a broom. Hey, a broom. Quidditch.
