Today, I’m going to do something different as I’m doing a retrospective to one of Ryougo Narita’s epic light novel series. In April 2010, I made two posts of the first season and I have to say that I was terrible at blogging anime at that time due to being busy in college in those days.
Looking at it, even though Durarara!! is a great series with a diverse cast of characters, I have regrets on not covering the whole 24 episodes due to being shaky in my first year of bloggin. And so, in celebration of its return after a 5-year hiatus with the announcement of Durarara!!x2, this post will take you a short recap of Season 1 starting with Celty Sturluson’s head!
While the first half of Durarara!! gives insight to some of the characters such as Shizuo Heiwajima’s origin of his incredible strength as well as his rivalry with Izaya Orihara, it’s all about Celty’s severed head as she is searching for it after it was taken away.
Rumor has it that her head was attached to Mika Harima’s body. In reality, Celty’s head is currently in Namie Yagiri’s possession (which eventually became Izaya’s property after making Namie his secretary) and she didn’t tell her younger brother Seiji regarding it until he finally learned the truth.
Although he accepted the truth and became Mika’s boyfriend instead of killing her out of rage, Seiji Yagiri’s obsession with Celty’s head is creeping me out when I watch it back in 2010.
Another thing I forgot about is Mikado Ryuugamine as he exert his authority as the leader of Dollars. I have to say that I like how Mikado becoming a badass by surrounding Namie Yagiri up with his followers, just by sending them a SMS!
Even though Mikado became a hero after Seiji Yagiri’s Pen-Stabbing Incident…
…his leadership is put to the test as he’s forced to fight in a three-way standoff between Anri Sonohara and Masaomi Kida as the former wielded a cursed blade called Saika while the latter returned to his Yellow Scarves gang as a leader.
Fortunately, he doesn’t need to fight both of his friends head-on as it was revealed that one of Masaomi’s fellow gang member Horada was responsible for kidnapping his girlfriend Saki, as well as committing various crimes with his buddies under the Yellow Scarves banner. Thus, Horada got his ass kicked and justice was served!
But you know, even though Horada and his men got arrested, Izaya is heavily-responsible for making this mess, which almost ruined Mikado’s friendship with both Masaomi and Anri if it wasn’t for Celty, Shizuo, and former Blue Squares members intervening the standoff.
So, Izaya got what he really deserve… A hard punch from Simon Brezhnev that he sent flying and got a black-eye. Well done Simon!
Of course, a hard punch from a black Russian guy doesn’t faze this troll a bit. Screw you, Izaya Orihara!
And that’s how it goes on the first season of Durarara!! To be honest, having a large cast of characters on this show confused the hell out of me at first.
But after seeing some characters stand out like Izaya and Shizuo as well as taking a bigger picture of its Ikebukuro setting, I regarded this series as one of the best in the ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko light novel lineup.
So with that said, I’m excited for next year as Durarara!! returns for Season 2. I’m sure Brains Base will cover the rest of the novel volumes in the span of three parts from January 2015 to March 2016.
Anyways, I’ll see you Celty and your glorious return in Winter!
