This was an unplanned topic. -___- I promise I was supposed to write about something less shallow, and yet a journey through my screenshots folder for inspiration resulted in me gawking – once again – at Tuxedo Mask. Which is ridiculous. Eight-year-old me wasn’t exactly infatuated with him during my hardcore Sailor Moon years — my priorities were largely centered around how to copy Usagi/Serena’s hairstyle (my subjective memory tells me I succeeded) and whether Jupiter or Mars was more badass (still undecided). But damn. Sailor Moon Crystal…Usagi’s eyes may creep me out occasionally, but dem bishounen designs be looking mighty fine.
Confession — I’m not caught up with the season. I went in knowing it would probably be little more than a nostalgia trip and I wasn’t disappointed, but I also wasn’t very intrigued. Which is why my immediate, mostly internal swooning over a character’s physical redesign was immediately followed by a blend of exasperation and amusement. Mamoru was the character I always laughed at, and I probably laughed even more at what I saw of his presentation in Crystal compared to way back when I watched the dub courtesy of sweet, sweet Toonami. For whatever reason, I completely forgot about his backstory, which is a bit ironic if you read through his Wiki profile.
Honestly, there were many attractively designed and written characters this year. Tuxedo Mask just happens to be the most unexpected. Really, who goes into a reboot of one of their favorite childhood shows thinking “oh man, I hope that one love interest who never did much for me is smokin’.” Really. Maybe I’m just weak to this particular brand of bishounen design. Actually, scratch that. I am weak to them. But hey, I’m part of the target audience, so I’m definitely not complaining. (*˘︶˘*).｡.:*♡
