Gon’s group goes through the process of entering the anti-technology country NGL. To do this, all manmade materials, including any sort of synthetic material, must be removed from their person. Due to implants, glasses, and other restrictions, only five are allowed to get in. And after all the pokes, prods, scans, and probably a full cavity search, the group is still being followed by NGL officials to make sure that they somehow didn’t sneak any machinery inside. Meanwhile, names have been given to the Chimera Ant squad leaders, with the original humanish one now known as Colt. And it turns out that Colt is the least accepting of some of the more psychopathic practices that some of his comrades are committing. He’s against killing humans before they can be fed to the queen, which is apparently a thing. Also, the group involving the Hunter Candidates Ponzu (bee girl) and Pokkle (archer) runs into a group of worker Chimera Ants. Pokkle is able to kill them, but it’s clear they are in up to their necks in the shit that these things are going to cause.

It’s far too early to say whether this arc is my favorite, but I can safely say it is the most effectively horrifying. I think that when a show is able to tie in a primal fear, like the fear of being eaten, that’s when it can be truly frightening. The combination of how powerful the Chimera Ants are compared to normal people and the callousness some of them show in killing whole villages of people is quite terrifying. And yet, by making Colt the “goodish Chimera Ant”, the show is still trying to make some characters on what is clearly the villain’s side sympathetic. And compared to the rest of his kind, he is definitely coming across that way.
